When she finally went to the bathroom, I grabbed her phone off of the bedside locker. I waited the sound of her getting in before turning it on. The code was the same as her laptops, so there wasn’t any need to guess, and I scrolled through her apps. Her text messages were frustratingly innocent as was her call log, I was starting to second guess myself, starting to convince myself that maybe I had imagined it was her, that it was some woman who looked just like her I had seen the previous day. It was at that moment that an Instagram notification pinged. I didn’t have an Instagram account of my own so it took me a moment to figure out how it worked, once I had, everything clicked into place. Lemar Smith had just sent her a message, I clicked on his profile and it was indeed the man I had seen her with last night, hundreds of pictures of him in various exciting situations appeared before my eyes, at parties, sports events, with various minor celebrities and often with multiple beautiful women. I went to the message he had sent Stephanie and my eyes widened as I read ‘’Hey babe, I can still smell you on my fingers’’ followed by a heart emoji. I flicked through the other messages they had sent each other and discovered that they had been doing this for 6 months, all the messages were highly sexual, on both sides and it seemed that they had met at one of Stephanie’s friend’s bachelorette parties, she seemed to have fucked him that night and never looked back. I put her phone down and left the house, I needed to clear my head and I wandered around the park near our house for an hour running over and over in my head thoughts about how Stephanie had betrayed me, how the women I loved had stabbed me in the back and how my marriage was effectively over. I needed to devise a plan to catch them in the act, to make her feel some measure of the shame I was feeling now. I got a couple of takeaway coffees and brought them back to the house where Stephanie was now out of the shower and in her PJs watching reality TV on the couch. I handed her a paper cup as I came in the door, trying to keep myself together long enough to orchestrate a little payback against her and her lover. So, I played nice over the next few weeks, acted like there was nothing wrong, and waited, all the time a plan was formulating in the back of my mind.

I told Stephanie id be going away on a trip the following week, a work thing, to try and close a deal in New York. She seemed a little bit too happy at the news as she told me that she would be fine by herself, that she could catch up with some of her friends whom she hadn’t seen in the longest time.
